What begins as another entry in Grandpa Eli’s journals leads Emma and Luke beneath the volcanic landscape of Northern California and into a mystery Grandpa never finished solving.
When Emma and Luke discover Journal 24, they find a hand-drawn map of the Medicine Lake region, a mysterious location marked “Tube 47,” and a warning written by Grandpa Eli:
DO NOT ENTER ALONE!
Following Grandpa’s clues leads them into a hidden world created by ancient lava flows. But inside the darkness, they discover carved markings, an unexpected survey marker, and evidence that someone else has been following the same trail.
And then they find the chamber Grandpa kept secret.
The Real Places Behind the Adventure
Although Emma, Luke, Grandpa Eli, and their mystery are fictional, the volcanic landscape that inspired The Lava Tube Mystery is real.
The Medicine Lake Highlands and Lava Beds region contains an extraordinary landscape created by volcanic activity. Lava flows, caves, obsidian, and other geological features provide the real-world foundation for Emma and Luke’s underground adventure.
The mystery is fictional. The places are real.
Inside Grandpa Eli’s Journal
Journal 24 contains more than a map.
Grandpa’s field notes document lava formations, cave passages, observations, sketches, and questions he was never able or perhaps never willing to answer.
One notation appears more important than all the others:

Beside it, Grandpa left a warning. He also left something out. Emma and Luke must discover why.

The Lava Tube Mystery introduces readers to real subjects while the adventure unfolds, including volcanic geology, lava-tube formation, cave ecology, obsidian, archaeology, and the importance of protecting cultural and archaeological sites. Emma and Luke learn that exploring the past isn’t about taking artifacts home. It means observing carefully, asking questions, documenting evidence, and leaving important places undisturbed.
Sometimes the most important discovery is the one you leave exactly where you found it.
