Hidden in the forests west of Mount Shasta, Gumboot Lake can feel like a place made for a mystery. Dead trees rise from the water, the surrounding forest grows quiet, and changing water levels can reveal parts of the landscape that were previously hidden. Most of these features have natural explanations but that does not make them any less eerie.

The Ghost Forest

The most striking feature of Gumboot Lake is bare trunks and weathered stumps emerge from the water, creating the appearance of a drowned woodland. In certain light, especially early in the morning or near sunset, the trees can look almost unnatural. Reflections double their shapes across the water, while mist can obscure the opposite shoreline. As water levels rise and fall, different portions of the submerged landscape appear and disappear.

Strange Sounds in the Forest

Mountain forests are rarely as silent as they first seem. Wind moving through trees, branches rubbing together, falling rocks, birds, and animals can produce sounds that are difficult to identify particularly after dark. Around an isolated lake, sound also travels across the water. Something occurring far from shore may seem much closer than it actually is. But when you are standing beside a ghost forest and hear something moving beyond the trees, knowing there is probably an explanation does not necessarily make it less unsettling.

Shapes Beneath the Water

Gumboot Lake’s submerged trees create another eerie effect. Logs, stumps, rocks, shadows, and vegetation beneath the surface can form shapes that seem to change as the water moves. A submerged log glimpsed through dark water might look very different from one angle than another. Ripples and reflections can make stationary objects appear to move.

Mist, Shadows, and Changing Light

Weather can transform Gumboot Lake surprisingly quickly. Clouds, mountain shadows, smoke, fog, and changing sunlight can alter both visibility and color. A familiar shoreline can look completely different under low clouds or evening light. Trees become silhouettes. Distant objects disappear. Reflections stretch across the lake.

Are There Spooky Stories About Gumboot Lake?

Yes. Though I have never personally witnessed it.

Although Gumboot Lake does not have the widespread supernatural reputation of Mount Shasta, people have shared some intriguing stories with me about strange experiences around the lake.

One of the most interesting involves a mysterious lake creature. I have received reports suggesting that the creature associated with Gumboot Lake may somehow move between Gumboot Lake and Castle Lake. How or whether an animal could travel between the two lakes is another question entirely, but the similarity of reported sightings has led some people to wonder if the stories are connected.

There are also reports of unexplained sounds in the surrounding forest, including heavy footsteps, knocks, calls, and other noises that witnesses have interpreted as possible Bigfoot activity. The dense forest and isolation around Gumboot Lake certainly provide the kind of setting where an unseen animal can remain unseen.

None of these accounts proves that a lake monster or Bigfoot inhabits the area. They are eyewitness stories and local reports, not established scientific evidence. But that distinction is part of what makes them interesting. When similar stories continue to emerge from the wilderness around Mount Shasta, they become part of the region’s folklore.

And at Gumboot Lake with its drowned trees, dark water, and forest stretching in every direction, it isn’t difficult to see how such stories take root.
